Grayscale Comic Guys profiles

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 28, 2009, 6:15 AM
The Grayscale Comic (no official name yet) is a continuing comic I work on whenever I feel like it (which is quite often at the moment). The main characters are mostly Norwegians from various places in Norway, which means they'll have different hobbies, opinions, traditions and words from one another.
To keep people from dying from an overdose of Norwegianness, there are also some (4,5) people from other countries, including a Russian, a Russian-Norwegian, a Frenchman, an Englishman and an English-Australian, who interact with the Norwegians.

It sounds kinda boring like that but I try to make it entertaining if not amusing. Anyway, onto the profiles.

Amount of comics so far: 35.

Small, flat and red-headed, she is the definition of red-head anger and self-consciousness. She likes making herself known by visiting new places and making riots or parties.
When not in a wild mood, she has creative hobbies to keep her occupied.
Referred to as: The little red-head.
Hails from: Sarpsborg (Østfold).
Comics: Lock the door

A rather short man with lots of hobbies and hardly any money. He is a part time police officer, but although he gets a decent salary he uses most of his money for tools and materials for his carpeting hobby, rather than actually prioritizing. He is convinced that he will get better paid as soon as more people hire him as their carpenter. This, however, is less likely considering he rarely wants people to pay for his work! He usually says something along the lines of "I'm doing it as a friend, don't worry about it". Even though he's only a part time police officer, he takes every chance he's got to keep people on the right side of the law, almost ridiculously so. Nobody dares let a flag drop to the ground when he's around!
He's best friends with the man below, and can't always see the bad things about him that the others can see. One would almost believe that he's his short friend's self-proclaimed personal bodyguard.
Referred to as: The carpenter; the policeman; the poor guy.
Hails from: Bærum (Akershus).
Comics: In de summertime | Go avay, I'm poor | How to give gifts | It has a switch

The very shortest of them all with his 150cm. He is known to be outgoing and often rude, whether he means it or not. When he speaks English he has a heavy accent, even compared to the other Norwegians. For some reason he has problems understanding what some of the other Norwegians are saying...
He does not understand why anyone would say that his taste in clothes is awful. But even if he's small and rather childish, he knows how to handle responsibility very well, and looks at a problem from many angles before doing anything about it. He is rather old compared to what he looks like, and is considered to be rich, even though he doesn't think so himself.
Referred to as: The short guy; the badly dressed guy; the boss; Sossen.
Hails from: Oslo.
Comics: En erupshion? | Rude cherries, vat? | The queen is a tall one | In de summertime | It is a stick | How to give gifts

Although he may not look like it, he is of the sami people. He is fully aware of his heritage, but does not consider himself a particular friend of the other three sami guys (although said three often jokingly include him in various conversations and interactions just to annoy him). He is very interested in the subject of Death, and he finds pleasure it other people's pain - unless he hurt them himself (for some reason he is terribly bothered by guilt). He is generally polite to people, even if he might make them uncomfortable when he, for example, asks them if he could look at their wrists.
His favourite non-morbid hobby is skiing.
Referred to as: The morbid-minded heathen; the wanna-be (the three sami guys call him that).
Hails from: Hamar (Hedmark).
Comics: Just so you know it | Leaning tower of Buskerud | Lock the door | Need something repaired?

:new:
Nothing is more important to this man than his wife and children. He would be more than willing to break the law to keep his family safe, and that might not always be a good thing. He, his wife and their four children live on a farm with cattle, chickens, half a dozen lazy cats, two Norwegian sheepdogs and a horse. His home is his job. One of his hobbies is hunting.
He's very friendly and open towards other people, whether he knows them or not. Strange as it may seem, his best friend is the morbid-minded guy in the profile above.
Referred to as: The family man; "My wife, my wife, I love my wife!" (mockingly).
Hails from: Toten (Oppland).
Comics: He's a family guy

This cheerful boy is not as young as he seems. He loves the sun and the summertime, as well as singing songs with others, mostly as loud as he can. He is very fond of animals, and can't think of anything worse than an animal-abuser. He might even turn violent at the sight of a fur coat...
Why he's walking around with a bear in a leash is still a mystery to the others. The bear's name is Kitty.
Referred to as: The cheerful guy; the bear guy.
Hails from: Drammen (Buskerud).
Comics: It's a big dog, see? | Just so you know it | In de summertime | Leaning tower of Buskerud | Go avay, I'm poor | How to give gifts | Medic? | Lock the door

The timid older brother of the little red-headed woman. He is known to be rather hairy, and people who don't know him usually associate him with an alcoholic of sorts, but he is really rather straight-edge. He is comparatively sophisticated and polite, and enjoys the outdoors.
Referred to as: The timid guy; the hairy guy.
Hails from: Tønsberg (Vestfold).
Comics: Lock the door

This woman is also not as young as she looks. Her personality is one of the more peculiar, as she seems to change from time to time. She loves football very much. When it comes to naming things she has a strange sense of choice: she could name her own pet "Umbilical Hammer" or "Little Hell". She has peculiarly bad luck when it comes to fire and should not be left alone with a lit candle (or even an unlit one!).
Referred to as: The sporty girl; miss Cause-of-fire.
Hails from: Skien (Telemark).
Comics: I think he loves women

Quite an old fellow. He is a lumberjack and occasionally a sailor whenever he feels like it. He arranges festivals, mostly music festivals, in his spare time. He dares to open his mouth to voice his opinion, but his red-head anger and and his shyness makes him a bad at discussing with others.
He's the brother of the woman below, and both of them have relatives and friends in Denmark, a country of which they are fond.
Referred to as: The lumberjack.
Hails from: Arendal (Aust-Agder).
Comics: In de summertime | Timber | She's a nun and she's okay | I think he loves women | The little happy country... | Face urns | We all know them

The man above's younger sister. She's a Christian, and doesn't hide it in the very least, but unlike the stereotypical Christian one sees today, she is quite mild-mannered and relaxed - but she demands that old traditions are to be kept when it comes to Christian holidays, especially Christmas! She knows what she wants and usually gets what she wants.
She adores exotic animals.
Referred to as: Mr. Lumberjack's sister or just "Sister".
Hails from: Kristiansand (Vest-Agder).
Comics: Timber | She's a nun and she's okay | I think he loves women | The little happy country...

One of the oldest. He is a muscular, cheerful flirt with his viking instincts still intact. He thinks he's a lot more attractive and irresistible than he really is, but trying to convince him so is difficult; should you succeed it would only last for a day or two before he's back to his own self. He works on an oil rig.
Referred to as: The viking.
Hails from: Jæren (Rogaland).
Comics: I think he loves women | Face urns | Need something repaired? | We all know them

She is one of a cooperation group consisting of her, her male self, the previous man and two married couples. This group is merely a group of friends helping each other out if problems occur.
She is a very relaxed woman who wouldn't have known the meaning of the word "stress" even if all the cherries in her garden suddenly rotted. She is in charge of producing a lot of cherries, and also grows apples, pears, plums, redcurrant, and honey. On top of that she also loves flowers, and has a lovely garden she likes to work with.
She is oblivious to any kind of flirting, and rather hard to have a discussion with, as she mostly agrees with everyone else.
Referred to as: Miss Cherry.
Hails from: Hardanger (Hordaland).
Comics: Rude cherries, vat? | I think he loves women

Unlike his female self, this guy knows exactly what the meaning of "stress" is. Not only stress, but anger, arrogance and disgust. He is commonly known as "the monkfish" because of his wide-mouthed dialect combined with his unnatural need to yell and shout at everyone who's not himself. On top of that he comes from a city in which rain is not uncommon, so being associated with a fish is something he has to deal with daily.
He is very proud of his own doings, belongings and ideas. Not to mention that he thinks his insults are ingenious. (He often bullies the badly dressed short guy and the flirty viking.)
He sings like an angel, and loves showing off.
Referred to as: Monkfish.
Hails from: Bergen (Hordaland).
Comics: Rude cherries, vat? | The queen is a tall one | In de summertime | Need something repaired?

A married woman. Although her body-shape and straight hair may be considered feminine, she cares little for make-up and skirts or even acting like a "proper woman". She likes teasing people, but doesn't really bully them.
Fishing is one of her favourite hobbies - a hobby in which she and her husband shares an interest.
Referred to as: "That blonde woman, you know, with the, uhm... you know."
Hails from: Førde (Sogn og Fjordane).
Comics: Hey, did you hear? | In de summertime

One of the three cheerful sami guys (who consider themselves a trio), he's the fourth tallest (195cm), but the third tallest man. He is the absolute definition of gossip; some people believe that he knows what you've said or done an hour before you've said/done it. This, however, is just a rumour.
He is mild and friendly, but at the same time curses a whole lot. His favourite hobby is mountain climbing. He speaks Norwegian and Northern Sami.
For a reason not even he can answer properly, he is the boss of the Englishman (further down this page).
Referred to as: The gossip guy; Boss (the Englishman only).
Hails from: Helgeland (Nordland).
Comics: The rumour has it... | Advanced vocabulary | Hey, did you hear? | In de summertime | In denial | Just say it | Coffee and moonshine

One of the three cheerful sami guys. He is known to be the youngest of the three, but since nobody has figured out the gossiping sami's age, nobody knows for sure whether or not this is true.
This man is a stubborn patriot, and is known to "have it all". If you need a tool, this guy has it. If you need sugar in your tea, this guy has it. Et cetera.
He speaks Norwegian, Northern Sami and Kvennish.
Referred to as: The youngest sami guy.
Hails from: Tromsø (Troms).
Comics: Oh, it's snowing | Colourful change

Another one of the three cheerful sami guys - he's also the third tallest (205cm). He comes from the very north of the country, and loves snow-scooters, alcohol, bad-mouthing the southerners and fishing. His curse words are considered the worst kind found in the country. He can speak Norwegian, Northern Sami, Kvennish and a little bit Russian.
He's the very oldest of them all, and is the boss of the Russo-Norwegian man.
Referred to as: The oldest sami guy; the smoker; Boss-thing-something (the Russo-Norwegian only).
Hails from: Kautokeino (Finnmark).
Comics: Advanced vocabulary | Medic? | Enough chit-chat | Colourful change

The tallest man, but the second tallest of them all. He is half Russian and half Norwegian, but can speak more than fifteen languages - maybe not fluently, but enough to get by when needed. He's also the only one of these guys who speaks Russo-Norwegian (or at least his own idea of what it sounded like, the few words that still exist).
He works in coal mines, and can often be found taking a beer right after work, covered in black soot in the face, the hair and his clothes. On his days off he enjoys fishing.
He is considered to be one of "the cold five", who are also referred to as "the five foreign people" when none of said five are present.
He's quite unfriendly to most people, and slightly less unfriendly to people he doesn't find as annoying as the rest.
Referred to as: The Russo-Norwegian; the mean guy; the miner.
Hails from: Spitsbergen (Svalbard).
Comics: Twist in your sobriety | The queen is a tall one | Medic?

One of "the cold five". This man suffers badly from culture shock, and has been suffering ever since he met the Norwegians. They never cease to surprise him. Then again he also does some things that the Norwegians find funny.
He is strangely interested in the weather and military defences - a strange combination, perhaps, but that's how it is. He is close friends with the French seagull guy and the drunk Russian guy.
He understands and can speak Norwegian fairly well, but sees it pointless to speak it as they all understand him when he speaks his own language.
Referred to as: The Englishman; the drama queen; old man.
Hails from: London (England).
Comics: En erupshion? | Zere is a zeagull | It's a big dog, see? | Oh, it's snowing | Timber | She's a nun and she's okay | It is a stick | Parlay voo francey? | Like visiting the '20s TV | In denial | Face urns

One of "the cold five". He is the most remote of them, living 160 kilometres from his nearest neighbour (a British man whose name shall not be mentioned as he is not a part of this series). He is difficult to notice unless you're looking for him specifically.
Despite this he has no problems getting attention - all he needs is to open his mouth and talk. He's a little shy, but can charm a girl to death if he wanted to.
Also, the seagull in his hair is called Benjamin, despite the fact it's a girl. Animals tend to like him - but he's terrified of dogs (and confined spaces).
He is French, and can speak a little Norwegian as well.
Referred to as: The French guy; Mr. Seagull.
Hails from: Saint-Brieuc (France).
Comics: Zere is a zeagull | Thank you | It's a big dog, see? | The little happy country... | He's a family guy

One of "the cold five". She's the very tallest of all the twenty-seven, with her 220cm. She is a half English and half Australian pacifist scientist. Close friends with the drunk Russian guy and the French seagull guy. She also happens to be the only person the Russo-Norwegian doesn't hate, and likes to take advantage of that.
Referred to as: The tall woman; the queen.
Hails from: Middlesbrough (England).
Comics: The queen is a tall one

The drunk Russian guy is also one of "the cold five". He's (self-proclaimed) best friends with the gossiping sami guy, and one of the most cheerful guys - unless he's drunk. When drunk, he could depress a tree, frighten a stone and make the clouds uncomfortable.
Although he's friendly and cheerful, nobody has been able to reach out to him and get to know him properly. Is he keeping something from the others...?
He's also friends with the dejected Brit and the French seagull guy - occasionally also friends with the Russo-Norwegian man.
He is the very youngest of all the twenty-seven people. He is recognized by his fractured English. He is, however, fluent in Norwegian.
Referred to as: The (drunk) Russian guy; Sir Shouldn't-have (the gossiping guy only).
Hails from: Kronstadt (Russia).
Comics: Thank you | The rumour has it... | Twist in your sobriety | The queen is a tall one | Parlay voo francey? | In denial | He's a family guy | Just say it | Coffee and moonshine

deviantID

My name: Vanja Marie Solemdal.
Vanja is a Scandinavian feminine form of Vanya, which is a diminutive of Ivan, which is a newer form of the old Slavic name Ioan, which came from the Greek Ioannes, also known as John which is the English form of the Latin version of Ioannes: Iohannes. The Greek version itself came from the Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning "Yahweh is gracious".
Marie is French and Czech form of Maria, which is the Latin form of the Greek Μαρια (Maria), from the Hebrew Miryam.
Solemdal is a Norwegian place name, consisting of the three words "sol" (sun), "em" and "dal" (valley). "Em" is a different version of the old Norwegian word "um", neither of which are used anymore, as they have been replaced by "heim" and "hjem", meaning "home".
If I'm not mistaken.
